NZTA Scam Alert: Don’t Fall for These Fake Messages
Scammers are stepping up their game — and now they’re pretending to be the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).
We’ve seen a rise in scam emails and text messages claiming to be from NZTA. These messages often look official and urgent, tricking people into clicking dodgy links or handing over personal information.
Here’s what to watch out for:
🔗 Rego Renewal Scams
You might get an email or text saying your vehicle registration is due. It includes a link that looks legit — but it takes you to a fake website. Once there, you might be asked to enter your driver licence number or make a payment. It's a rego scam.
💸 Fake Toll Invoices
Some scammers are sending out emails saying you owe money for tolls. These messages often include a convincing invoice attachment or payment link. Don’t open it — it’s not from NZTA.
🪪 Fake Driver Licences for Sale
If someone is offering driver licences online or through social media — it’s a scam. These licences are not real, and using one could land you in serious legal trouble.
🛑 How to Protect Yourself
Don’t click on suspicious links in emails or texts.
NZTA will never ask you to update your info or pay through unofficial channels.
Use the official NZTA app or website to check your rego or driver licence details.
